*Now, you COULD be adventurous and fire her up and go full speed ahead here if you want. There is quite an extensive help system in mIRC. However, the less adventurous will want to read the following instructions that will help you connect to our.IRC network:

The Setup Screen *The first time you start up mIRC, the Setup screen should pop right up once you close the opening window (the one with the programmer's face on it). If not, press Alt-E to bring it up. You should be at the tab named "Connect".  To add servers, click on  the "Add" button.

Adding IRC Servers* You will see five boxes. In the "Description" box (or field), put anything you like that will tell YOU what it is. In the "IRC Server" field, put the server name or address. For example, you can put in "quiltchat.ascends.net", "hurricane.ascends.net", "hurricane.va.us.ascends.net" OR "209.9.226.194". It doesn't matter, they all go to the same place. In the "ports" field, you can list all the available ports with commas in between to cycle through all the ports randomly. The "Group" field allows you to sort by IRC net or otherwise. Putting "0" in the group field will keep a preferred server at the top of the list while putting "Ascends.Net" will ensure that all Ascends.Net servers will stay together. Leave the "Password" field blank unless you know for sure that you need one.

NOTE:  There may be a couple of Ascends.Net servers listed (but not many). Generally speaking, we try to use hurricane.ascends.net (ports 6667-6669, & 7000) most often since, if everyone is on the same server, there are fewer splits. Here are a few others that you probably don't have and can add to the list, using the "add" button.

Your screen should look like the screen at right. Click "OK" to return to the "Connect" tab.

Entering Personal Info* You must now fill in the blanks on the "Connect" tab properly to connect. However, please DO NOT put your real name or real e-mail address in the blanks (yes, I know this is confusing)! What goes in the blanks is almost anything BUT what they ask for. In the "Real Name" field can go a quote or a silly name or a little bit of info about yourself. It really doesn't matter what is in this field, although be aware that people will see this when they ask for info about you. In the "E-Mail Address" field goes anything BUT your real e-mail address as long as it IS your real provider. For example, if your e-mail address is whatever@erols.com, put anythingelse@erols.com. Put two proposed nicknames in the "Nickname" and "Alternative" fields. These nicknames should be unusual enough to ensure that no one "owns" them. If you find yourself getting "killed" off before you can get connected properly or having your nickname changed for you, try changing these to more unusual ones. Make sure the box next to "Invisible Mode" is checked off for extra security.
Local Info Tab* Now, click on the tab that says "Local Info" up near the top. If there is anything in the boxes for local host and IP address, clear it and leave it blank - mIRC will fill these in for you. Then, where it says "On Connect, always get...", put a mark in the box for local host (both boxes will then be checked). NOTE: There is another box there for IP method. Leave "Normal" selected and, if that doesn't work, try "Server".
Identd Tab* Click on the tab that says "Identd". Make sure that the box that says "User ID" says the same as the first part (username) of the E-Mail Address that you entered on the "IRC servers" tab. For example, if you entered anythingelse@erols.com, put "anythingelse" here. Then check off "Show Ident requests" and "Enable only when connecting". NOTE: the "System" field should say "UNIX" and the "Listen on port" field should say "113" unless you have reason to change this.
* Click on "Connect" to go back to the screen that lists the servers.  Now, pick one of the Ascends.Net servers (preferably hurricane.ascends.net) and click on "Connect to IRC Server" and it will connect. You may have to try it a few times or switch to a different Ascends.Net Server on the list to connect. When you are connected, you will see the server welcome information on your status screen. At the bottom of the status screen, you will see a long narrow box across the bottom where the curser is. In that box type:

/join #QuiltChat

You should then be in the chat channel (room).

Connect Options Tab*Once you have all your info set up, the next time you use mIRC you can just click on the lightning bolt icon and it will connect to the last server you used.  However, you can click the "Options" tab and choose the settings at right and you will connect automatically upon starting up mIRC.  This will also cause you to keep trying to connect until connected.  NOTE: You will only have to go back into Setup when you need to change Ascends.Net servers.
* After you are connected, a screen pops up with some pre-loaded chat rooms. If not, click on the third icon from the left up top (Channels Folder). Type in QuiltChat and click on "Add".  Then, with #QuiltChat highlighted, click on "Join". From then on, the room will be added to that list. The next time you want to sign onto mIRC, click on the lightening bolt icon in the upper left under "File" or allow it to connect. Then, when the chat room box pops up, choose #QuiltChat and click join! That's it!

* Once you are connected to Ascends.Net, you can use the Ascends.Net services (ChanServ, NickServ and MemoServ). You can learn a lot about these by typing (for example) "/nickserv help" at any time. You can also download either services.hlp (a windows help file that "plugs" into mIRC by downloading it to your mIRC folder) or servhelp.txt (a text file of the commands available). For more help with Ascends.Net Services or for more information, try #Ascends.Net or visit the Ascends.Net website at:
